If you are starting at your budget and wondering where else you can save, then you likely want to start extreme frugal living.

But making the transition isn’t always the easiest.  Plus, going in too hard can often lead to rebellion and you spending too much again.

These simple steps will help you make the switch from lavish spender to extreme frugality extraordinaire.  Take slow and follow the process.

Start small

It is much easier to make several small steps than it is to make a couple of big ones.  Therefore start your journey to extreme frugality by making small changes.

This could be cancelling a subscription service or changing your energy supplier.  It could even mean growing a few herbs and vegetables.

Achieving these smaller steps will motivate you to keep moving forwards and working towards your goals.  Every action will compound to create big change.

Cut back on luxuries

Although we enjoy them the first items that need to go luxuries.  Anything that you don’t NEED should be up for scrutiny.

You don’t get rid of all of them in one go.  See the point I made above.  But you should be set on the idea of removing the majority of them at some point.

I would recommend only keeping those that truly get you closer to your goals.  For example, if your goal is to complete a triathlon then you might want to keep your gym membership.

Reduce costs on needs

With the luxuries dealt with, it is time to work on making sure that you are paying as little as possible for the needs.

For out of contract services, you can use an online switching platform, such as uSwitch.  Alternatively, you can ring your current provider and ask for a discount.

If you are still in contract, then there is no harm in ringing them and asking for a discount.  Just don’t expect to get one.  You can enquiry about what the exit fees are and weigh those up against potential savings.

Focus on what is important

I’ve said already that you should only keep the things that get you closer to your goals (necessities excluded).  You need to consider what your motivation is for living this way.

Once you have that worked out then the whole process is easier.  It becomes a choice between the item you are holding in your hands the way of life you longing for.

Go extreme

With all the above under control, it is time to take the leap to the extreme.  This is the point where you consider every penny and all the little actions.

It is taking these steps that, although they may seem small, adds up to make a big difference.  It is this extreme action that separates you from everyone else.
