Moving house is expensive, solicitors, estate agents, removal costs and so much more. It is frustrating as it feels like you really don’t see much for your money but they are all so essential when you need to move house. When we recently moved house I got thinking about all the things we did to save money on our removal costs and thought I would share them with you.
Packing materials
There are so many boxes and packaging packs available online but do you actually need them? The answer is yes, of course, you need packaging materials, you can not possibly pack your whole home in carrier bags. That said you do not need those packaging materials.
If you are considering a move within the next year then start saving any boxes you get delivered now alongside any packaging materials such as bubble wrap, air bubbles, peanuts etc. If you can use them to pack items straight away this is ideal as makes storing them easier and takes the stress away from the big packing you need to do when you find somewhere to move to. Alternatively flat pack the boxes and binbag the materials to ensure they are easy to store until you need them.
Removal company
Not all removal companies are equal. They may offer different services and this could change the price significantly. If you are happy to do all of your own packing then be sure to make the company aware of this so they do not include any packing fees in your quote.
Consider looking for companies that do not use removals in their name. I know that sounds silly but a man and a van can be just as good but so much cheaper. They are used for single items up to full house moves but may not be found in the yellow pages under removals. All this means is you get a better price and should not affect the service at all.
Find an affordable man and van and ask them to quote you for whatever you need to be moved by them. Be sure to check their insurances so they are covered if anything gets broken and that they are a genuine company with good reviews. Avoid any companies which have no online recommendations because you are trusting them with your whole house of belongings!
